How to check if your car has a recall by VIN

RecallPulse guide · 2026-11-06

A year/make/model search shows which recalls might affect your car. Only a VIN check tells you whether your specific vehicle is included.

1. Find recalls for your year, make and model

  1. Open the RecallPulse home page and choose year, make and model.
  2. Or browse all makes and open your model page.
  3. Read each recall: defect, risk, remedy, and which model years are named.

A campaign can cover only some vehicles of a model year (build dates, plants, options). That is why the VIN step matters.

2. Confirm with the official NHTSA VIN lookup

  1. Find your 17-character VIN on the driver-side dash (visible through the windshield) or the driver door jamb sticker.
  2. Go to the official NHTSA VIN recall lookup.
  3. Enter the VIN. NHTSA returns open recalls that apply to that vehicle.

You can also ask a dealer to run the VIN. Dealers usually do this at no charge for safety recalls.

3. If a recall is open

  • Contact a dealer for that make and schedule the free remedy (parts and labor for safety recalls are paid by the manufacturer).
  • Keep the campaign number (for example 24V-123) from NHTSA or from our recall detail pages.
  • Watch new recalls this week if you want to catch fresh campaigns early.

What RecallPulse does not do

We do not store VINs, run VIN lookups, or give safety advice. We republish public NHTSA and CPSC data so you can browse faster, then send you to the official VIN tool to confirm.
